Abstract: Part 1 of this article series (1) examined water chemistry issues related to the use of evaporative coolers (EC) in combined cycle power plants. Such cooling systems operate in a similar manner to conventional cooling towers so that make-up water and blowdown relate to cycles of concentration (COC). The article also reviewed common water chemistry guidelines that aim for protection of the combustion turbine, or to protect the EC. Calcite indices noted in Table A of Part 1 included the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI), Ryznar Stability Index (RSI), and the Puckorius Scaling Index (PSI). The authors noted that existing water chemistry guidelines can be confusing because the calcite indices give conflicting results and different control ranges are used for the RSI and PSI when they should theoretically be the same.
